ObjectiveTo clinically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Sanhan Xuanfei Decoction(SXD) on acute cough with syndrome of wind-cold attacking lung.MethodsThe randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial was adopted,138patients from Guangdong Hospital of TCM(Ersha Branch) were enrolled and assigned to two groups, the69patients in the treatment group were treated with SXD, and the another69in the control group treated with placebo, both were taken twice a day(1dose), and all patients were followed up for a period of7days. They recorded the severity of cough and the other accompanying symptoms such as throat itching on a cough severity scoring which was divided into four classes. The scores were marked on the third, the fifth and the seventh day and reduction in score was examined for efficacy evaluation of SXD.ResultsPatients of the treatment group studied showed a significant decrease in the severity of cough not on the3rd (P>0.05)but the5th and7th day (both P <0.01). After treatment, the symptom scores on throat itching of the treatment group were significantly lower than the control group (P<0.01). The SXD group had a total effective rate of85.5%respectively, of which the cure rate occupied over half the proportion, was almost twice higher than the placebo group (47.8%, P<0.01). No cases got worse in the treatment group while3cases in the control one had to be cured according to syndrome differenciation once more after the clinical trial was ended. ConelusionSXD is an effective and safe TCM decoction which has a good prospect of application and extension in treating acute cough.
