ObjectiveEvaluation of catgut-embedding therapy of lumbar disc herniation and safety.MethodsChina Knowledge network database to retrieve, WeiPu Chinese Scientific Journals Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, WanFang database; MEDLINE, Cochrane Library and other databases, the database can not get through the Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine literature library manual searches obtained to collect catgut embedding therapy lumbar disc herniation (LDH) randomized controlled clinical trials, retrieval deadline to January2014, to meet the inclusion criteria for Cochrane systematic reviews of JADAD manuals and improved quality assessment scaleResultsThe study included10documents published for the2006-2014period, a total number of925cases of treatment of lumbar disc herniation patients. The cure rate evaluated10studies show that catgut-embedding group and the control group, the test for heterogeneity P=0.06>0.05, the fixed effects model, RR merge=1.64,95%CI [1.41,1.91], Z=6.50(P<0.00001); JOA scores evaluated, including four studies test for heterogeneity P=0.25>0.05, the fixed effects model, MD merger=3.08,95%CI [2.52,3.64], Z=10.72(P<0.00001); VAS scores evaluation, a study showed that the catgut embedding in comparison with EA VAS score difference was statistically significant [MD=3.27,95%CI [0.68,6.86]], one study showed that embedding group in comparison with EA+infrared VAS score difference was statistically significant [MD=0.57,95%CI [0.37,0.77]], one study showed that acupuncture embedding+acupuncture in comparison with acupuncture VAS score difference was statistically significant [MD=2.10,95%CI [1.61,2.59]]; ODI scores evaluation, a study showed embedding group in contrast with EA+infrared ODI score difference was statistically significant [MD=1.59,95%CI [0.04,3.14]], one study showed embedding+acupuncture in comparison with acupuncture VAS score difference was statistically significant [MD=20.89,95%CI [14.19,27.59]].10studies reported no adverse events.ConclusionsCatgut implantation treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is safe. In comparison with ordinary acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, physiotherapy and other traditional therapies showing significant effect, in alleviating back pain, improving waist and legs dysfunction and improve the quality of daily life better than non-embedding group. However, due to the inclusion of studies in the literature are limited and low quality literature, a small randomized controlled trials, making research results demonstrate strength decreases, the need for further study of high-quality, large, randomized controlled trial.
