Objective: To understand the effectiveness, safety and labor progress characteristicsof double balloon catheter in term pregnancy for cervical ripening and labor induction. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted at the Department ofObstetrics and Gynecology of No.210Hospital of the Chinese People’s LiberationArmy (PLA) from July2012to May2013among594nulliparous women. Doubleballoon catheter cervical ripening and induced106cases as DBC groupcontrolled-release dinoprostone cervical ripening and induced104cases as CRD group, spontaneous vaginal delivery384cases as control group. Changes of Bishop scores, induction to labor intervals, mode of delivery, labor progress and each postpartum indexof experimental patients were collected, they were compared using the twoindependent-samples T test, one-way ANOV and χ2test; and Excel scatter were used toconstruct fitting labor curves, to evaluate the effectiveness, safety and labor progresscharacteristics of double balloon catheter in term pregnancy for cervical ripening andlabor induction, so as to offer good treatments for clinical obstetrics.Results:1. Effectiveness of double balloon catheter for cervical ripening and laborinduction:①.Bishop scores: Bishop scores of placed before and after in DBC groupwas statistically significant(p<0.05); Bishop scores of placed before and after in DBCgroup was average increased2.7scores, compared with the CRD group(mean2.72scores),there was no statistically significant(p>0.05).②. Mode of delivery: mode ofdelivery’s constituent ratio in DBC group and CRD group was statistically significant(p <0.05), cesarean section rate in DBC group was lower than that in CRD group.③.Indications of cesarean section: cesarean section indications in DBC group were (fromhigh to low) abnormal labor, social reasons, fetal distress and failed induction, and thatin CRD group were (from high to low) fetal distress, abnormal labor, social reasons andfailed induction, cesarean section indications’ constituent ratio in two groups wasstatistically significant(p<0.05).In addition, rates of fetal distress and failed inductionas cesarean section indications in DBC group were lower than those in CRD group.2. Safety of double balloon catheter for cervical ripening and labor induction: inCRD group’s vaginal delivery women there were1.61%uterine tachysystole rates, butthere were no uterine tachysystole happened in other two groups.Postpartum2hourshemorrhage and postpartum urine retention rates in vaginal delivery women of threegroups were no statistically significant(p>0.05), there were no neonatal asphyxiahappened in three groups.3.Affect on labor progress of double balloon catheter for cervical ripening andlabor induction: the first stage of labor and total stage of labor in DBC group both weresignificant shorter than those in control group(p <0.05), the second stage of labor andthe third stage of labor both were similar with those in control group(p>0.05),furtheranalysis showed that although active phase was similar with that in control group(p>0.05), but latent phase was significant shorter than that in control group(p <0.05);the first stage of labor, second stage of labor, third stage of labor and total stage oflabor in DBC group were similar with those in CRD group(p>0.05), further analysisshowed that although active phase was longer than that in CRD group(p <0.05), butlatent phase was significant shorter than that in CRD group(p>0.05).Conclusion: It is concluded that double balloon catheter used in term pregnancy forcervical ripening and labor induction has a good clinical effect, can significantlyimprove the condition of the cervix without the side effect of medication, having highlysafety and the most important is that it can shorten labor so as to reduce maternal painanxiety and physical consumption, so that it owns preferable clinical popularization andapplication value.
