At present, China is in the period of transforming from traditional agriculture to modern agriculture. Information technology has been widely used in the field of agricultural production, and the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology has been indicating its great advantages. The spatial location characteristics can be obtained by establishing the spatial database using GIS, which thereby makes those abstract spatial relationships and complex data information vivid, intuitive and easy to understand. GIS can significantly reduce agricultural consumption, lower production costs, and improve production efficiency, which is of great value to enhance the modern management of farm.The overall system, taking a hierarchical structure, is divided into four layers, among which are perception, transportation, data management and application. Perception layer, base layer of the four-tier structure, is responsible for data collection. This layer is in charge of providing accurate and real-time data to the transportation layer by collecting the information of field environment and crop through various sensors. Transportation layer is responsible for data transmission, which will send the collected data to central nodes via ZigBee wireless network, and then to the upper layer by unified transport system. Due to the wide space of the farm and the number of center node, the system studied the problem about central node optimal placement, maked the center node number reaching the minimum in the condition of connection.The data layer is mainly for unified storing and overall management of basic geospatial data, farmland environment attribute, real-time agricultural condition, crop planting information, agricultural equipment management data, user information, and so on. Application layer is the application platform of the entire farm management system through which users can achieve intelligent management to the information of farm work site and farm management, so as to provide decision-making support for farm production.The whole system adopts C/S development model which is based on Visual Studio 2010 developing platform and C# developing language, using modularized, visualized, component-based methods to develop. With the introduction of GIS technology, the system uses the MapX component from Maplnfo company as GIS platform to develop a farm geospatial management platform. SQL Sever 2008 as the database platform, is used to manage the entire system data.Along with data collection, including collecting data of air temperature, air humidity, carbon dioxide concentration, light intensity, and other basic information, the system also provides management above farming operation, crop material, equipment information, and farm’s personnel information. It not only implements pinpoint query of the farm geographic data and environmental information, but also succeed in farm’s scientific business management. Meanwhile, the farm system provides the optimal cultivation model using the objective function that is based on maximizing benefits, in order to make sure that resources can reach maximum utility.The study and development of GIS-based farm management system changed the traditional farm management model, which leads it from manual management into information management. It greatly improved farm work efficiency and decision-making level of scientific management, with higher promotion and application value.
