A Study On Traditional Brocade Box Decorative Arts And Its Contemporary Applicative Value In Packaging Design

With the development of history and society, people have more and more profound understanding for the traditional culture. They also show their aspirations of affection, protection and inheritance for the traditional culture. As a traditional handicraft, the brocade box is engraved with history. The skills for making it are handed down from generation to generation and become mature gradually. The brocade box, as a special packaging to deposit and protect valuables, has always been the favorite for its safety, soundness, stability and aesthetic value. The study will proceed with the development, techniques and artistic features to discuss the applicative value of Chinese traditional packaging decoration, by trying to design and produce a new type of brocade box packaging.There are five chapters in this study. Chapter one is the introduction. It expatiates the statues related to the study and demonstrates the value of research. Chapter two is a brief backtrace for the traditional brocade box decorative arts from the Pre-qin period and Western Han and Eastern Han Dynasties to the period of Ming and Qing Dynasty. It confirms that through long-term development, till the Qing Dynasty, the textile material like framed Song brocade has become the mainstream of brocade box decoration. Chapter Three is an analysis about the material preparation and technological process of the box production. Chapter four discusses the decorative art features of the traditional brocade box in detail. According to the decorative technique, the exterior bone type of fabric, the subject of emblazonry, the decorative colors and the foiling of accessories all form their own artistic rules and embody strong humanities. These all pursue the basic principles of the brocade box decorative design. Chapter five uses the contemporary application of the brocade box as an entry point to discuss the prospect of the brocade box’s decorative art market, by analyzing examples of the producing of the contemporary new type brocade box. In this chapter, a multi-layer pu’er tea brocade box design is put forward, which is a practical exploration for the contemporary brocade box design.The traditional brocade box is a packaging style with a long history in China. It is a unique kind of the traditional handicrafts. When people study this kind of traditional decorative art, they should pay more attention to the inheritance and innovation. Nowadays, different kinds of new type packaging are emerging in endlessly. The design and producing for the traditional brocade box also should update constantly. It should not only embody the art value in construction, material and decoration, but also should lay emphasis on the practical value about the combination of the traditional culture and new type goods.
