Study On Interior Space Of Literati’s Residences Of Suzhou In Late-Period Of Ming Dynasty

Traditional interior culture occupied the important place in Chinese nation’s cultural heritage and it reached its pinnacle at the late period of Ming dynasty, which reflect vivid national characters and profound cultural connotation.The literati extensively set foot in interior design during this period, promoting the development of residential indoor literati art, bringing up a large amount of furnishings and creating higher aesthetic indoor living atmosphere. It makes the literati’s residence outstanding,unique and represent in traditional Chinese residential type,which deserves us to be studied and researched further.This paper mainly takes Suzhou area literati residence in late Ming dynasty as the research object, by the historical literature data correlating with block-printed edition and paintings to field analysis on literati’s interior space.The objective factors that influenced the literati’s residences are analyzed from the regional environment, economic civilization and technical background.Then this paper analyzes in detail interior spatial arrangement which seek harmony in diversity and summarizes the characteristics of literati’s residential spatial arrangement which include rigorous and capacious hall,elegant and comfortable bedroom and gentle and quiet study room.From the decoration of interior space, it analyzes all interfaces in indoor residence containing floor,ceiling and wall,the basis of diverse decoration forms mainly in doors,windows and partition and features of interior decoration, makes a comprehensive discussion and summary on the decorative art through more detailed study of inspecting literati residences in combination with the unique folk customs, history, culture, literati character in Suzhou area.Furthermore,it emphasized the interior furnishings layout style and characteristics which contained furniture,lyre-playing and bonsai,elaborated types of furniture from halls,bedrooms and study rooms and stated the displaying characteristics to conclude that literati stressed particular furnishing layout style,exquisite furniture and delicated furnishings and set harmonious and unity tone of the space. All in all, this paper studies the characteristics of the display of civilian residential interior space to analyze the relationship between furniture and space, furniture and furnishings, furnishings and space and so on, summarizing the basic characteristics of literati interior space design in late Ming dynasty to make it inherited and mirrored in today’s traditional interior space design.
