The construction of new campus has been greatly inspired with the popularization of higher education in China recently, and the design of learning space has also attracted more and more attentions. The learning space in UK’s higher education has been chosen as the research object because the author has been studied more than one year in UK and investigated a large number of examples. The learning space researched in this essay is more about the great range of learning space.Based on the development of modern higher education and university buildings, this essay explored the impact factors for designing learning space, which are educational philosophy, physical and mental demands for users, architectural technology, and new learning theories. The study is divided into three levels:single function level, group learning space, and entire building level. Based on the theory of Savin-Baden, the research of single function level has elaborated the form, layout, indoor display, technical support for the six main function, which are writing, dialogue, reflect, digit, display, and boundary, through the way of field investigation, comparative analysis, and literature review. The research of group learning space focused on the space properties which are from Gilles Deleuze, Pamela Woolner, and mainly discussed the five main factors:liminality, textuality, polysemy, nomadism, and topology. Four methods of learning space innovation have been summarized as Striated Learning Space, Smooth Learning Space, Borderland Learning Space, and Troublesome Learning Space, and formed the mainstream design strategies for learning space innovation. The research of entire building has chosen three typical cases, School of Engineering at Lancaster University, Blavatnik School of Government at University of Oxford, and New Flagship Campus for City of Westminster College, studied the learning space characteristics, and investigated the using experience and practice effects through Semantic Differential Method. Eventually some experiences have been summarized for the guidance of current construction of Chinese higher education. |
