At present, with the increasing demand of products upgrading and new products designing in the market, enterprises urgently need rapid design methods to survive in the fierce competitive environment. For avoiding duplication of similar parts in the product design, reusing the important design knowledge and overall controlling the product design process, template technology, knowledge engineering technology and parametric design technology is studied, also a rapid design method based on knowledge template reuse is proposed. In this paper, the rapid design method has application in designing the hydrogenerator stator coil mould to realize the inheritance and reuse of knowledge, and the function of rapid design and quick modification is verified. The main work of this paper contains:(1) Through object element of basic element theory, this paper prestents template unite and a mathematical model of unite encapsulation template model. By the analysis of object element model of simple parts, the characteristics of object element which is the smallest unit of product design are explored and the research of complex products is contained. For the use of template in the specific design, this paper proposes a parameterized and knowledge based integrated solution strategy, the design flow to specify the usage is established.(2) Technology integration is researched. Knowledge extraction technology is used to extract key knowledge and knowledge-based reasoning is utilized to establish a template design model. The geometric topology attribute describes the similarity of parts, which is helpful to match templates. With CATIA software as a platform, the creation and application of template is studied, and a template catalog is builded to improve the mechanism of template. Also, parametric design technology is introduced to achieve the horizontal and vertical association of model design, top-level controlling and global correlation.(3) The frame and programme of rapid design based on knowledge template reuse is summarized and employed. According to engineering actual practice, design knowledge of a hydrogenerator stator coil mould is extracted to create a template catalog, the design of its mould and blank parts is completed with the rapid design method. Through the comparison in rapid design and quick modification, it shows that the design experience and knowledge is inherited and reused, the workload of repeated design is reduced and the efficiency is improved.
