Renovations of industrial factories has raised people’s concern recently. In China, renovation practice are mainly focused on office, retail and culture areas. However, residential renovation is rarely seen in China. As architects, we should explore more possibilities of industrial renovation to bring new vigor and vitality to our city. Since residential housing is the basic needs for our human beings, it is explicit that exploration in this area is of large significance. This thesis is based on this situation and try to enrich another area in industrial renovation practice.Nanjing is a city where many institutions of higher education are located in. Every year tons of excellent students graduate from these institutions. Nevertheless, according to the survey conducted in 2015, only 20% graduates decide to stay in Nanjing. There are two main reasons for this phenomenon. Firstly, the cost of living is so high in Nanjing that most new graduate cannot afford. Secondly, the existing affordable housing amount cannot meet the demand of these students. As a result, this design is supposed to renovate the factory to affordable housing for young professionals. The new form of youth apartment can be accepted by them since young people tend to accept new form of living more easily. I hope this design can solve the residential housing problem of young people in reality.The site of this design is located in No.66, LingjiaoShi, Laifeng Street, Qinhuai district, Nanjing. After analyzing transportation and surrounding buildings functions, I firstly decided the function of each factory. The design is focused on the following problems:(1) public space for young people (2) structure form (3) scale transformation (4) improvement of physical environment. Solutions for these problems are found out by case study. Shipping containers are used in this design. The advantage of using shipping containers are multiple, such as low construction cost, short construction term, modularization, flexible and eco-friendly. The life length of shipping containers are extended when insert them into warehouse. In addition, thermal insulation are improved. Determinant is the way that residential units are organized. The atrium full of sunshine solves the problem of ventilation and natural lighting, and provides young people a place to communication with each other.The thesis consists of four part in total:(1) design background and site research (2) problems of design and case studies (3) architectural design (4) architectural drawings...
