The water supply project of Alxa Tengger Economic-Technological Development Zone in Inner Mongolia, not only meets the demands for water, but also solves the problem of shortage of the water, which restricted the development of local industry. The project is also crucial to promote economic development in the industrial park.Firstly, this paper describes the incidence and causes of water hammer in pressure pipes, and briefly introduces the six flow pattern of air-water two-phase flow, and the mutual transformation between them. Then briefly summarize the method of characteristics, which now is commonly used for the basic numerical calculation for pump-failure water-hammer.A detailed analysis of the phenomenon of water hammer about the water supply project in Alxa Tengger Economic-Technological Development Zone of Inner Mongolia, under the most unfavorable conditions, is researched systematically in this paper. There are eight schemes about water hammer protection, including installing slowly-closing check valve in pump export, exhaust valves and buffer exhaust valves along the pipeline, and box type two-way surge tank in the specified locations. Then compare the eight schemes, to discuss the effects of different methods and choose the optimal scheme.In this paper, the research on water hammer protection in the water supply project, provides the reference value for water hammer protection in the long-distance water supply projects. Besides, it has some reference for the safe operation of the pipelines.
