Water is an irreplaceable limited natural resource. The spatial and temporal distribution of water resources is uneven, which causes the serious regional water shortages. It becomes an obstacle to urban development constraints. Therefore, the government developed more and more national and local long-distance water diversion project construction in recent years. Because of the particularity and complexity of water projects, there exist a growing number of problems in long-distance water project, one of the most common and prominent problem is the water hammer protection in long distance water pipeline. So we should pay more attention to the security issues of the pipeline.Firstly, the paper introduces the background and significance of the subject of water hammer studies,briefs the basic concepts of water hammer, causes, harms and development of domestic and international water hammer conditions. In this paper, we make the optimal operating conditions and water hammer protection programs in long-distance and heavy caliber water conveyance system as direction, detail the long distance and heavy caliber pipe water hammer characteristics. Its focus is on Cavities Collapsing Water Hammer Protection. At the same time, we analysis the pipeline balloon campaign boost theory, give the pressure fluctuation of each condition and the best way to exhaust.Secondly, this paper presents that the long distance and heavy caliber water hammer protection focus should be regulated exhaust, details of the structures, functions and performances of the common protective equipment(slow closing check valve, intake and exhaust valves, overpressure relief valve and box-type two-way surge tower).
