3D piping design of A engineering company is as practical background in this paper. The paper introduces Critical Chain Method(CCM) based on the Theory of Constraints(TOC) in the application of 3D piping design schedule management. The purpose is to take advantage of two chains, confirm critical path for former 3D design time estimation by using Critical Path Method(CPM),then reduce safety time and shorten design cycle by using Critical Chain Method(CCM).Firstly, author introduces basic concept of traditional schedule management in oil engineering, analyze current situation of 3D piping design by using CPM, put forward some limitations and defects which aren’t satisfied with practical situation in project schedule management when CPM meets with resource constraints and emergency conditions. Secondly, Critical Chain Method(CCM) based on Theory of Constraints(TOC) can improve above defects in project schedule management. It brings us a concept of CCM and buffer which can overcome resource constraints and uncertain conditions. It’s a effective way for schedule management of 3D piping design. Finally, Model of 3D piping design schedule management is built up based on CCM. Safety time is canceled by factor analysis of time estimation. Buffer size is set up by variance method. The purpose is to control least influence on schedule management when 3D piping design meets with resource constraints and emergency conditions. This paper aims to compare critical chain method with critical path method in application of 3D piping model schedule. The result is that critical chain method don’t need to modify project schedule when resource constraints and emergency happen. Critical Path time changes from 192 days to 159 days. From time completion of 3D piping model, total progress has advanced 31 days by using critical chain method. If study result of this paper can be used in 3D piping design schedule management of big size petrochemical project, or even can be extended from project stage to whole project process, it will result to give engineering company and client underestimated economic benefits.
