A Study Of Residential Boundary Along The Street

The rapid development of urbanization is directly reflected in the transfer of ruralpopulation to urban population, which brings about substantial demands for residentialconstruction. Living, as the top priority of the four urban functions, namely, live, work,recreation, transportation, includes the places for daily life and communication. The boundaryof the residential area along the street, as the transition part between the private residentialspace and the public space of urban streets, is regarded as the ideal spatial place for dailycommunications.On the basis of the macro-background and theories, this paper takes the boundary alongthe street of the residential area in the main urban area of Nanjing as the research objective.Firstly, it sorts out the historical evolution of the streets along the street of the residential areasin China and on the basis of its current status, summarizes the three issues, namely, the lack ofhumanized design and isolated inside and outside boundaries, sidewalk occupied by vehiclesthat affects the daily traveling and the mutual interference of the mixed functions of theboundaries along the streets of the residential areas.Secondly, this paper expounds on the roles, the defining elements and the influentialfactors of the streets of the residential areas. To obtain the first-hand information about theresidential area along the street in the main urban area of Nanjing, the author conductsin-depth investigation in the city proper. The investigation is divided into two phases: the firstphase concludes the influences of the natural conditions and humanistic characteristics inNanjing, the types of the boundary along the street of the residential areas at different time anddegree of opening and the characteristics of the defining elements of the boundary along thestreet of the residential areas as well as the current conditions of the entrance, corner and thered line area of the boundary along the street of the residential areas；the second phaseconcentrates the assessment of the environment of the boundary along the street of theresidential areas in a certain area.Based on the aforesaid investigation and analysis, it proposes the optimizing strategy forthe common issues and the current status of the boundary along the street of the residentialareas in the city proper of Nanjing so as to build a positive boundary along the street of theresidential area by following the three optimizing principles of giving priority to safe walk,residential functions and creating recreational activities and the four optimizing techniques,namely, enclosure and transparency, connection and transition, repetition and change as wellas guidance and directing.Thirdly, this paper also analyzes a new trend for the boundary alongthe street of the residential area and discusses about the development direction for the urbanresidential areas in the future.Through the research can put forward suggestions for the design of activities boundaryalong the street of the residential areas and providing references for the relevant research in thefuture.
