The paper took metropolitans in big cities of developed countries as objects, andstudied systematically the spatial development in the context of globalization andinformatization, regionalization, the reconstruction of World Urban System, and therevolution of modern science and technology. The paper attempted to describe accuratelythe new characteristic on spatial development of metropolitans in developed countries’ bigcities since1990, to reveal the mechanism and natural reasons of spatial evolution, tosummarize and predict the trends and latest tendency of spatial development, and tosummarize and abstract the objectives and strategies of spatial optimization in the futureusing the methods of combining empirical analysis with theorical analytic, combiningquantitative with qualitative, and systematic induction based on the theories of urbanspatial analysis and analytic. The article’s discussion process was divided into four parts. The first part was the third chapter. The research suggested that there were severalnew changes of spatial development of metropolitans in big cities of developed countriessince1990. The paper analyzed transform on spatial form of new residential community, new industry, new business office, new educational research, new business casual, newlogistics exhibition, then summarized the regional spatial integration under thesuburbanization promoting, functional and structural reorganization process under theurban renewal. The second part was the fourth chapter. The study advocated that the whole spatialevolution process of metropolitans in big cities could be interpreted by the behavior-flowmodel. The paper suggested that seven major factors contributed to spatial structureevolution of metropolitan in the era of globalization and informatization, including thetransform on production and organization mode, the guidance of regional macro policy, the evolution of technology and industrial structure, the construction of traffic andinformation network, the restructuring of resource and energy system, the reconstructionof ecological protection and configuration, the collusion of social culture. The third part was the fifth chapter. The research generalized and deduced several trends of spatial structure elements of metropolitans in big cities of developed countriessince1990. The paper suggested that there existed to be urban-sprawl slowing and factorsconcentration increasing trend of land organizational structure, to be the trend on stand-upof center city and metro node of public central structure, to be the trend on degreedeepening of vertical dimensional and horizontal networking of transportation networkstructure, to be the trend on gradual becoming of point open, line connective and varietycorridors forming of ecological framework structure. The fourth part was the sixth chapter. The research summarized and abstracted threeobjectives and four typical strategies of spatial optimization of metropolitans in big cities. The paper pointed out three common challenges which metropolitans faced since1990,including climate change, sustainable development and global competitiveness. The studysuggested that Compact, multi-core and resiliency growth were the three objectives formetropolitan’s spatial optimization. The article elaborated spatial optimizationcountermeasures from four aspects inculuding regional development guidance, structuralelements optimization, focus area lead and social institution indemnification, and finallyexplored to build an ideal spatial structure model of metropolitans in big cities in thefuture.Paper’s application fields included related theories research of contemporary urbandevelopment and urban planning, and spatial development and urban construction ofcurrent and future metropolitans in the big cities both domestic and international. Thefurther study suggestions are the rational identify on spatial characteristic of metropolitansin big cities, the research on evolution of specific functional spatial types, the revisse ofideal spatial structure model, and the path and model of spatial optimization of Chinesemetropolitan in the international perspective.
