Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the Pepople’s Republic of China(MOHURD) announced the lists of first90national smart cities on January29,2013. Itmeans the development of smart city is in a new step. Based on the feedback data of urbanconstruction is the key element. As the advance of scinece, traditional research methods cannot be used in data collaction, collation and analysis because the data is small sample size, poor randomness and unclear. How to improve the effect of data and let it make sense insmart city is still a question. As the development of smart city, big data research becomes a hot word in coming years. The whole big data process is that a large number of various types of data are collected intothe database, analyzed and get the final results which are provided to decision-makers asreferences. Traditional research methods such as interview and pbservation also can supportuseful data to urban designers at the same time. This paper discusses a real case study to show how we can use big data research andtraditional research to the urban public spcace design. Try to get experiences of urban publicspace design from this case study to help our country to create smart, harmonious andbeautiful cities. This paper is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the era background, define the key concepts, analyse therelevant theories and research results. Finally determine the research method and technicalroute of this paper. The second chapter shows the relationship between the big data and the traditionalresearch methods. On the one hand, this chapter reviews the development process of the datain the United States. This part introduces the value of big data and how can we use big datainto urban planning area. On the other hand, this paper introduces the traditional researchmethod into urban public space. Finally summarizes both differences and advantages of thesetwo research methods. The third chapter introduces the investigation of the public space in Main Street, SantaMonica. It shows the project background and how to use big data and traditional PSPLresearch methods to get the correct and overall public space situation. The fourth chapter presents design of this project. Author comes up with concept designfrom design theories, design strategies and reform suggestions. The fifth chapter comes up with critical thinking about using both big data researchmethods and traditional research methods to urban public space design. Combinedwith the development of data in China, author puts forward the enlightenment function in thefuture. |
