Research Of The Construction Technology Of Traditional Architecture In Southern Jiangsu

The paper is the a sub part of " Research on Construction and Technology ofEndangered Building in Jiangnan Traditional settlement "(No.51278228), which issupported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. This study investigatesancient villages in Suzhou Dongting Dongshan and Xishan, some of the most typicaltraditional settlements, together with other settlements in Southern Jiangsu. The researchcombines the historical documents with field investigation to do further research onconstruction of traditional buildings in Southern Jiangsu.This paper consists of three parts. Chapter I and VI are discussions and summary oftheoretical research referring to the relevant materials, under certain span of time and spacebackground. Chapter II and Chapter III analysis traditional settlements siting and layout inSouthern Jiangsu and Suzhou Dongshan and Xishan from various aspects such as geography,history, sociology and typology. Then it illustrates architectural style and layoutcharacteristics through specific research data, which is the material basis of structural research.Chapter IV and Chapter V is the main part of the paper. It divides into two categories, whichis wooden construction and tile and stone construction. Wooden construction includes girder,column, wooden layer and other components, together with wooden decoration. Tile andstone construction studies construction techniques, which are foundation, floors, walls androof.Finally, the chapter summarizes construction features of Southern Jiangsu traditionalsettlement buildings and compares with other settlements around. Through a series ofstructural comparison between Northern Jiangsu and Southern Anhui traditional building, itconcludes the construction features of Southern Jiangsu traditional buildings, as theoreticalbasis for further regional research and redesign.
