Non-circular pin-cycloid transmission is proposed as a new type of gear drive,which can implement variable gear ratio transmission between parallel axes.Non-circular pin-cycloid transmission incorporates the characteristics of non-circulargear and pin-cycloid transmission. It has lots of advantages, such as small in size, easymanufacturing, low cost, easy maintenance and so on, which make it possible to bewidely used in many fields. Therefore, it is significant to research non-circularpin-cycloid transmission. This paper carried out research on theory, parametric designand characteristic analysis of non-circular pin-cycloid transmission.The meshing coordinate system of the noncircular pin-cycloid gears was set up,with the principle of forming conjugate tooth profile described. The forming ofnon-circular cycloid gear’s conjugate profile and epicycloid of ellipse were described.Transmission principle of non-circular pin-cycloid transmission was studied. The toothprofile equation of the non-circular pin gear was established, then that of thenon-circular cycloid gear was derived through coordinate system transformation, on thebasis of conjugate tooth profile theory and the cutter’s tooth profile equation.The parametric design of the gear pair could be obtained by Matlab program, basedon transmission principle of non-circular pin-cycloid transmission. And then threedimension model could be derived with the application of SolidWorks. With thekinematics analysis of the noncircular pin-cycloid drive in Adams, the correctness ofprinciple and design of non-circular pin-cycloid drive was verified according to therelative analysis between experimental result and theoretical arithmetic result.Characteristic analyses of ellipse and high order ellipse were discussed. Kinematicscharacteristics, working pressure angle characteristics and load characters of ellipse andhigh order ellipse were discussed. By means of comparative analysis, the change lawsof pitch curve, transmission ratio, angular velocity, angular acceleration, workingpressure angle, torque of cycloid gear, normal force, tangential force and radial forcewere presented. And relationships between geometric parameters and them werediscussed.In addition, the simulation machining system of non-circular pin-cycloidtransmission was developed by the use of application programming interface (API) inSolidWorks. The system was used to get the3D entity model and assembly of non-circular pin-cycloid transmission. According to the research of this gear’s designand manufacture method, the envelop method was proposed to manufacture the entity ofnon-circular cycloid gear. Furthermore, the parametric design of non-circular involutegear could be implemented by the system. Finally, the paper investigated the applicationin engineering of non-circular pin-cycloid transmission. An example of using this newgear drive was given in the paper.
