Research On Hushan Old Town Of Traditional Settlement Formand Inheritance Practice

The Minnan traditional settlement is an essential part of Chinese traditionalsettlements. Hushan town, as an offshoot of the Minnan traditional settlement, reflectsthe development and evolution of different societies at different times. However, withthe development of economy, and the innovation of building technologies, buildingmaterials and building structures, modern architecture gradually impacts on the statusof traditional architecture, especially when contemporary cities are becoming thesame. The traditional settlement of Hushan old town inherits characteristics ofMinnan traditional settlements, and has its own characteristics of adapting mountainenvironment. In the long term of reforming and adapting to natural conditions, thepattern of the present Hushan old town has gradually formed.The equisite traditionalbuildings, the elegant decoration, and the colorful folk customs are architecturecultural accumulation in old town. Facing at the innovation of technologies, Hushanold town appeared confused architectural styles and disorderly constructions afterfounding new state in China, which leading to destroying many traditional buildingsand losing several conventional building technologies. Thus, it is necessary to planprotection, summary the characteristics of town settlement, present essential contents,which will play an important and positive role on protecting traditional architecture,continuing on geographical features and context.The study object of the paper is Hushan town of Yongchun County, FujianProvince. According to the research, interview and field mapping, combiningliterature and summarition, the paper will study traditional buildings of old town andanalyze architectural forms of traditional settlement from three parts.Part one, chapter three and four study the essential characteristics of traditionalsettlement of Hushan old town. First, from the analysis of natural geographicalenvironment and history and culture of traditional settlements of Hushan old town,the research elaborates social and cultural customs. Then, the study analyzes the sitecharacteristics of the old town, the layout features in researching the shape and features of settlements. Part two, the main content of chapter5is to discuss themorphology and building type system, combing the constituent elements ofarchitectural space, summary building materials and forms. And the final content isthe analysis of decorative details including wood carving, stone carving and watertankers, which will sum up the region’s decorative features. The traditional buildingculture of Hushan old town will be analyzed from outside to inside as the part two.Part three, the modern heritage of traditional architecture of Hushan old town.Because of designing and reforming Hetang Commercial Street of Hushan town, thequestion of inheriting architectural design of Hushan town is considered. Based onsummarizing and extracting the architectural essences of Hushan town, and arrangingmodern design terms, the Hushan old town’s building culture and context can beinherited.
