The telemetry system of liquid tanks is an important part of ship automation. It can monitor ship ballast tanks, fuel tanks, fresh water tank and the ship’s draft status by the important parameters real-time collection, such as the liquid level, temperature, gas pressure and liquid cargo density in tanks, etc. That is very significant for the management of liquid cargo, ship stability and ship navigation safety. The communications and sensor technology of industrial field is the key of the tanks telemetry, also has a close relationship with computer information automation applications.According to the characteristics of monitoring applications, the paper firstly summarizes the disadvantages of conventional tanks monitoring networks (such as RS485fieldbus, etc.), and then combineding with the development of WSN and CAN bus technology and its current application in ship engine room, gives the design ideas based on both, which uses wired and wireless network strengths in the monitoring of ship tanks. The monitoring network hardware solution is proposed from the overall structure design to complete the hardware design of gateway nodes and sensor nodes and software system preparation; it has chips AT89S51, SJA1000, and CC2430. According to the overall design, the paper finishes the protocol conversion and physical connections between ZigBee network with CAN bus, and management of the underlying sensor nodes wireless networking, and sensor selection and arrangement of ship tanks, and the special design of frame structure for wireless nodes communication in ZigBee protocol application layer.By the test about communication between two wireless pionts, and test between sensor nodes and the host computer under laboratory conditions, which proves the correctness and feasibility of the design. The hybrid monitoring network based WSN and CAN bus can complete the monitoring of ship tanks better, which is extremely significant for improving the level of ship automation and researching Internet of Things in fields of ship, with its flexible installation, ease of maintenance, and the high level of compatibility and portability in other types of monitoring systems.
