Guizhou is a province of China which has rich intangible cultural heritage. Thecultural diversity and cultural symbiosis of Guizhou culture ecosystem is rare intoday’s rapid modernization, industrialization and urbanization in China. In Guizhouthere are a lot of intangible cultural heritage of minority, and Miao costumes craftswhich are still well-preserved ancient textiles, embroidery, batik, silverware andother production techniques is its essence.Since the reform and opening up, with the market process, the economic andsocial interaction between the Miao community once closed and external world isincreasing, Miao culture has also been confronted with a considerable impact, andcultural heritage is facing some kind of potential crisis. So, how to understand thecultural heritage of minority status under the new era of market-oriented context, andthe future development path of minority cultures, has becoming the fundamentalissues related to the sustainable development of minority cultures which are discussedin this study. Therefore, based on Miao clothing culture which is one of the importantcomponents of the Miao culture, the study explore the contents and features of MiaoCostumes, particularly investigate the change of Miao clothing in the market, and thesocial action of Miao people which are heir of Miao costumes, as well as the factorsof inheritance of Miao costumes, for the purpose of having a more comprehensiveknowledge and understanding of the changes of traditional culture in the market andin the process of modernization of the Miao culture and costumes. Through theanalysis of the traditional host and heritage mode, the study try to make policyrecommendations to optimize some of the traditional culture of sustainabledevelopment.The study is divided into four parts.The first part is the introduction which puts forward to the background andsignificance of the study, literature review (research on Miao history and culture, onMiao costumes, on the intangible cultural heritage), and research ideas and methods.The second part is to investigate the culture and costumes of Miao which involvethe historical conditions, characteristics of Miao costumes cultural, and the crafts ofMiao costumes, then to analyze Miao embroidery as intangible cultural heritage, thecarrier of culture of Miao ethnic and community, and the way of traditional craftsheritage.The third part is the focus of this study. Firstly, the study begin to analyze the background of the Miao community and the livelihood patterns and needs of theagricultural community in Guizhou Mountains which is the cultural environment ofMiao; then to analyze the impact and the consequences of the modernization Miaopopulation faces, especially analyze the changes of Miao costumes consumer; todiscuss the industrialization of Miao costumes, as well as the change of Miaocostumes and skills; to analyze the change of Miao community; to discuss the crisisof Miao costumes cultural heritage in the market, which include the collapse oftraditional communities inheritance patterns, the disappearance of inheritance peoplein industrialized and mechanized production mode, human labor alienation in thesystem of package—bought of manual production, and the loss of cultural heritageand the deprivation of public nature.The fourth part of this study attempts to make policy recommendations of theinheritance and sustainable development of Miao costumes culture: the symbioticcollaboration of multi-agent, vital inheritance and productive protection, sustainablereconstruction of live function and aesthetic function, the establishment of culturalsharing platform. Various efforts will bring sustainable development of Miaocostumes culture heritage.
