The study in this dissertation presents a new scheme for the multiple services CATV access network, combining EPON with traditional hybrid-fiber-coax network after comparing EPON and traditional HFC data networking, based on DOCSIS(DOCSIS, Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification). In HFC network, 1550nm optical transmission is the preferred technology to span long distances and 1310nm optical transmission is preferred to network traditional two-way achitecture. If EPON is chosen to implement data optical divided network, we could implement 1550nm optical transmission to achieve a much cheaper and better metropolitan area network application. In order to achieve a good transmission performance, however, impairments induced by Stimulated Brillouin Scattering, Self Phase Modulation, Dispersion have to be avoided. This dissertation presents the results and anaysis of investigations on the impairments with respect to standard single mode fiber. A detailed 1550nm CATV network performance design method is presented.Several different Ethernet over Cable transmission solutions are analyzed and the baseband one is chosen. The design for a combination of a baseband EOC (EOC ,Ethernet over Cable) and basic CATV business is presented.
