"Internet of things" is on a rapid development in these years. According to the needs of precision agriculture and smart forestry industry, this paper proposed a real-time soil moisture monitoring and precise irrigation control system based on ZigBee and GPRS protocol. A nationwide application website was established:www.prcesise-irrigation.net. On the basis of the data, a preliminary analysis of the characteristics of soil moisture in the SPAC system (Soil Plant Atmosphere Continuum). The specific content of the paper is as follows:1. The build of soil moisture remote monitoring and precision irrigation control system based on the "Internet of Things" architecture:soil moisture remote monitoring system uses wireless sensor network technology to build close link with the irrigation valves embedded on each node of the network, which ships the entire system with real-time soil moisture monitoring functions. Wireless distributed control node capable for obtain real-time soil moisture, rainfall and other data is independently developed as well as remote wireless data modules and solar power systems.2. Design of soil moisture control system based on ZigBee and GPRS technology:the research finished the software development of network monitoring system and introduced the detailed design scheme of the system as well as the major sub-modules. The expected functions are met for control soil moisture remotely. Network status is able to be monitored with the system.3. Deployment in experiment bases:in Pingquan, Hebei Province, a300aces of demonstration base was set for precision irrigation control with11wireless acquisition and control node.4. Application promotion:In Shandong Province, Heilongjiang Province, Shaanxi Province, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Haidian District and Changping District, Beijing,84real-time soil moisture monitoring stations were set up. System was running in field environment more than two years, access to information of2,7million entries. Various parts of the data shows that the system has good stability and has achieved goals of precise irrigation control for water conservation. In compare with traditional manual irrigation methods, the system was able to save about20%water.5. Preliminary discussion of plant water model:based on real-time soil moisture information, the soil moisture status was initially assessed. Soil moisture and water consumption trend were analyzed, and response of soil moisture for precipitation, and plant water usage relationships with soil moisture were explored.
