China’s librarianship has developed rapidly since the foundation of the PRC, but itstill lags behind that of developed countries. The protection of the readers’s rights is aserious deficiency where we should make more efforts. Besides, no relativelyauthoritative or universally recognized theory system concerning that has beenestablished and there are few high-quality relevant articles with clear-cut theme, rather, there are a number of articles about the analysis of tort and exploration of its protection. The majority of those who are engaged in the research of the readers’ rights arelibrarians of colleges and universities who are lack of in-depth theory researchcapability. What is more, no distinct theory has been formed, for few fruits from makinguse of advanced experience of foreign countries in light of our domestic situation havebeen achieved. Therefore, this thesis is aimed at conducting a relatively in-depth research intoreaders’ rights by means of logical argumentation and quotation. One of the basicrequirements of the rule of law is to represent the sovereignty of people and protectindividual legitimate rights, from the perspectives of which, this thesis categorizes thereaders’s rights into five aspects: equal access to knowledge and information, rights tobasic service of libraries for free, independent choice of knowledge and informationwithout interference, rights to criticizing, giving advice to and supervising the librarianservice and rights to having the protection of personal information. It is hoped therecognition of the readers’ right can be better geared onto the track of legal managementof the libraries.
