Ecology and its related theories are widely applied by various theories as a practical and dynamic research method due to its unique perspective and research methods in understanding of events. News ecology refers to the concrete application of ecology in the field of news communication. Sachsse believes that "the ecological investigation mode is a big step forward, because it has overcome the isolated thinking mode that is based on individuals, and recognized that all the living organisms are part of a certain entirety".The abnormality and high uncertainty of unexpected events make them become the important content that media scramble for. Meanwhile, unexpected events also examine the reporting level and capability of media, as the news response and reporting performance of media usually give a concentrated expression of their habitual news concept and operation characteristics. In the age of mixed media, the competition between news media on the market becomes more and more intense, resulting from more open information, more options of the public for media, commercialization among media and the popularization of "citizen reporters". Doing their best to seize exclusive news eventually leads to the imbalance in the news ecology, especially the imbalance of media reports amount and the simplification of reporting in unexpected events. In this paper, Sichuan was taken as a case. From the perspective of unexpected events reporting, a means that combined various research methods, such as content analysis method and text analysis method, was adopted, and the contents about storms in2007,2012and2013in newspapers of Sichuan Daily, Chengdu Daily, Chengdu Business Daily and Western China Metropolis Daily were chosen for comparison. The basic idea of this paper is to interpret the text from the surface information to the connotative information. The surface information refers to the news text content provided by news media, including topic selection as well as reporting subjects, genres, tone, etc., and the content analysis was used as the main method in this part; connotative information aims to interpret the causes that result in ecological imbalance and that hidden behind the text, by analyzing news text. With taking the specific news as the starting point, this paper has provided a multi-dimensional and multi-angle demonstration of the news ecological picture reflected by Sichuan media in unexpected events reporting; besides, it also reviewed that how news media reflect their normalized quality in abnormal events. This paper was divided into three parts. The first part, including Chapters I and II, mainly introduced the research background, significance and methods, sorted out the theoretical basis and the concept of unexpected events, and clarified the research scope of this paper; the second part, namely, Chapter Ⅲ, comprehensively presented the sample contents and quantification results, and then analyzed and interpreted the statistical results, mainly including text analysis on reporting genres, contents, objects, tones and other basic elements of news framework, and finally drew conclusions; from the perspective of news ecology, and part Ⅲ, namely, Chapter IV, gave a rational discussion that was based on the in depth understanding of samples and that abstracted the samples as well, then summarized the core idea of this paper from the view of ecological reflection, studied the causes of news ecological imbalance, and thereby put forward relevant strategies and suggestions.
