The conventional weather radar and the new generation Doppler weather radar are relatively introduced in this paper. Especially, the signal processing algorithm of conventional weather radar and new generation Doppler weather radar is carried on the thorough discussion. A new algorithm instead of the conventional algorithm is proposed to reach the better performance.First of all, the development and domestic research level of conventional weather radar is discussed as well as the background and significance of research. The detection principle of conventional radar and the influencing factors of radar measurement is also presented. Therefore, the development and domestic research level of the new generation Doppler weather radar is recommended. In720A, for example, the function and implementation principle diagram of each weather radar subsystem is expounded and the features of signal processing of the new generation Doppler weather radar is illustrated in detail.In the second place, a new algorithm named chirp-z-transform algorithm is bravely presented by summing up analysis and consulting relevant literature and it’s applied to the weather radar signal processing. Through Matlab simulation, it has a better ability of spectrum analysis on signal processing of the new generation weather radar. Compared to traditional FFT algorithm, the precision of computational result is dramatically improved in the case that the computational complexity is not increased.Finally, the FFT designation of chirp-z-transform algorithm is introduced and has realized the FFT algorithm based on a modular design. Design uses the sequential structure and each unit works under the control of the central control unit in order. A piece of dual port RAM is employed as a middle structure storage. Butterfly processing part adopts rapid complex multiplication which can decrease the times of multiplication, improve the computing speed and save the chip resources. Butterfly processing uses integer arithmetic and each operation has certain error. Along with the increase-ment in arithmetic progression, errors will increase. This design also utilizes simple and fast address to generate the logic. It paves the way very well for the FFT algorithm applied to the signal processing system of the new generation Doppler weather radar.
