Electronic Shelf Label (ESL) is an electronic display modules used by retailers for displaying product pricing on shelves. Typically, the devices are attached to the front edge of retail shelving. These modules are used to show the current product price to the customer. A communication network allows the price display to be automatically updated whenever a product price is changed. This communication network can be based on wired or wireless technology. ESL systems can realize the consistency of the cashier of commodity prices and the shelf price label and has the advantages of simple operation, without the need for a large amount of paper resources and manpower.Electronic shelf label system mainly uses the way of cable and wireless communication way. The main shortcomings of cable communication are wiring difficulties, poor mobility, high operating and maintenance costs. Wireless communication at home and abroad mainly using active radio frequency technology and ZigBee technology, there is a large power consumption and high cost. After comparing the current mainstream of the wireless communication technology, and in-depth study of the protocol specifications and features Bluetooth low energy technology, then, a new electronic shelf label system solutions is proposed based on by low-power Bluetooth wireless communication technology, new display technology and hardware-software co-design technology. This paper first introduces the architecture and working principle of the system, then ESL using CC2540as the main chip, which integrated with microcontrollers and RF, and electronic paper as displays is designed to implements the function of data receiving and sending, electronic paper display and power detection, etc. The hardware and software design of the gateway is introduced, which uses ARM9processor, Linux kernel and Qt graphical user interface as a platform to realize data processing and forwarding. Finally, the power consumption of the whole system is analyzed. At the same time, software and hardware low-power design methodology and operating mode control is used to reduce system power consumption. And a closed-loop test platform is developed to do a lot of power consumption testing and system testing.Experimental results show that the system works stably and reliably, and has advantages of low power consumption, low cost, easy to use, etc, and it will have great market prospects.
