With the world pay more attention on the development of ocean energy constantly, marineresearch efforts of our country are also increasing, dispatching ships to study on the oceanexpedition every year. Scientific research ship work far from land for hundreds of miles long,working environment is bad. Because the mobile phone signal does not cover this area, contactingwith the outside world is very difficult. Most of the scientific research ships are equipped withsatellite phones to communicate with external word only in emergency situations, becauset the costof satellite phone communication is expensive.Members on the ship with advanced equipment cancontect with friend or family through e-mail. However, the sended mail will be delayed a day ortwo to send to the destination mailbox, and not all the families of the crew can use the mailbox,which make the crew keep ground staff in touch inconvenient. Can not contact with family andfriends, make originally dull crew life more difficult, and also added mental stress to the memberson ship, some people even conflict seafaring because of the inconvenience of communication.In the light of this situation, this thesis focuses on the research of a SMS gateway based oniridium network and GSM, using iridium provide transparent data channel and GSM syste, that canmake the land people and crew texting each other in low cost. This will relieve the mental pressureof the crew, so that they may harbor the joyful mood and systemic heart into work,which can playsa big role on improving the work efficiency and emotional stability of the crew for the ship.In this paper the main work to be completed as follows: the system hardware design, ShortMessage client software design, Short Message server design and implementation, multi usersystem design, system debugging.The main hardware of the system is the TC35I module of peripheral circuits, including theserial interface circuit, control circuit, power supply circuit and an indicating circuit etc.Multi user design is mainly take the storage technique to separate the user login authenticationand data, to prevent others from seeing the user chats and mail list information, in order to achievethe purpose of protecting the privacy of users.The system software that can be divided into server software and client software aim oncompleting the information transmitted. Server software mainly completes the mailbox data readinganalysis, TC35I module drive and storing the communication record etc. The client software mainlycompletes the9522B module driven design, user communication interface, multi user datamaintenance etc. Because the software part need the hardware’s support, when the system step into debuggingstage, we must be debugged the hardware circuit frist and then debug software part. Finally, thewhole system debugging and experiment show that, the design of SMS gateway based on iridiumsystem and GSM can successfully complete the short message forwarding, achieved the intendedtarget of this project.Finally, the paper reviews the research work, summarize the problems existing in the design,prospect the development trend in future of communications between ocean and land, also analysishow to improve the subject.
