In the design and application of electronic products, how to control the power consumption has been an important issue. As the core of electronic products, microcontroller power consumption has been the first priority of chip designer and software developer. In recent years, ARM(?)’s32bit kernel named Cortex-M was select by most MCU manufacturers. Compared with the traditional8bit&16bit MCU, Cortex-M have most advantages, such as processor speed, high processing number, strong operation ability, with floating-point instruction structure, strong compatibility, high efficiency of instructions, peripheral rich characteristics. It has very low power consumption although it has high performance. Atmel as a low power microcontroller manufacturer, has8bit MCU with own AVR kernel which has a high efficiency and low power consumption. At present, Atmel has launched the new32bit MCU based on Cortex-M, and design AVR’s low power technology which named PicoPower into the new32bit series. While chip design loop, Atmel according to Cortex-M’s rich peripherals resources, high bus bandwidth, designed a special power management. It include with event system management, power voltage scanning, Sleepwalking, and frequency adjustment. It has a better low power function compare with other similar products. This paper through analysis of different brand MCU with Coretex-M core; analysis of the efficiency contrast with AVR and SAM4L, compare power consumption mode of SAM4L with SIM3L1XX those both based on Cortex-M, analysis of SAM4L’s PicoPower; analysis and test five different work mode of SAM4L; analysis and test use Sleepwalking mode with AST modules and six peripheral modules:CATB, ADC, DAC, DMA, TC, ASIC; attempts through the CMOS basic power principle, to analyze the MCU select and low power system design. Try to find out the way of how to make lower power design while used32bit high speed high efficiency. Hope it be a reference of the low power application design while used MCU.
