Memristor is a significant discovery in the history of the development of circuit theory, and it is comparable with the invention of the transistor one hundred years ago. Nowadays, there are three basic passive circuit elements besides resistors, inductors and capacitors, memristor is considered to be the fourth basic circuit element. The most prominent feature of the memristor is its natural memory function and good switching performance, and has a huge potential in the field of non-volatile memory, reconfigurable signal processing circuit and artificial neural network. With the development of memristor technology, memristor is not limited to a binary mode of operation (on and off states of memristor). Memristor can also play a huge role in the design of analog circuits. This paper is organized as follows:(1) Theoretical knowledge. An overview on the development status of memristor at home and abroad is given, including the concept, the physical realization, and application prospects in many fields. Then the relevant knowledge of memristor is introduced. Firstly, existence of the memristor is proved in view of the completeness of circuit theory and electromagnetic field. Then, several circuit characteristics are elaborated. Finally the detailed analysis of HP titanium dioxide bipolar switching memristor working principle and mathematical models are given.(2) Memristor modeling and simulation. The results of simulation in Sipce and Simulink are given. The influencing factors for resistance variation are discussed, which involves these parameters such as voltage polarity, the frequency, amplitude and duration.(3) Study on the specific application in programming analog circuit. In this paper, a simple programmable resistance is proposed using pulse to program the state of memristor. Compared with digital potentiometers, the programmable memristor has advantages of simple structure, small size, and dynamic continuously variable range, which display a great potential application in analog circuit design in the future.(4) A new rectangular wave generator based memristor. The proposed circuit does not contain discrete capacitor element, the frequency and amplitude of output waveform can be adjusted accurately. This paper expanded the range of applications of memristor to the field of analog circuit design using properties of memristor. A new digital potentiometer and rectangular wave signal generator were proposed, and the numerical simulation results verity the correctness of theoretical analysis. Memristor-based programming analog circuit has a good performance and provides new ideas in integrated circuit design in the future.
