In recent years, with the All-IP evolution of telecom networks, more and morenetwork equipments which require high precision time synchronization use networksynchronous clock technique to achieve time synchronization of the whole network.IEEE1588based synchronization is a well accepted synchronization technique. Thetechnique has some special characteristic such as high accuracy, simple implement,low cost, good security and so on. The distributed network system designed by usingthis technique can achieve time synchronization of the whole network withoutadding network load. It supports system wide synchronization accuracy innanosecond range.In the future, in order to adapt All-IP evolution of telecom networks,the GPS technique which has already been widely used in telecom networks will bereplaced by IEEE1588based synchronization technique.Passive Optical Network technique which is the major technology in accessnetworks have been widely used all over the world with serveral application scenarios suchas FTTC、FTTB、FTTH and so on. With the development of3G and4G wireless technique,frequency spectrum is much higher than before and coverage area is much smaller too, andmost mobile bussiness happen indoor, so the deployment of Femtocell is imminent. PON isthe best option to carry the mobile bussiness of Femtocell. So the requirements ofsynchronous clock technique is supported by10G EPON which is the next generationPON technique evolution direction.In this paper, the background of the research of time synchronization and thecurrent domestic and overseas research status are introduced. The mechanism ofIEEE1588protocol is illustrated. Then, a scheme which can realize the highprecision time synchronization in10G EPON system is descibed, and theimplementation detail of the scheme is explained with test result.
