This paper is a cultural analysis of space image in Teng Huatao’s teleplay, on the basis of space theories, space cultural theories and semiology theories. With a start from teleplay script of Teng, this paper reads the typical space image in city plays from a critical perspective, discusses different discourse right effect and social cultural implications in certain space, which is a new field in TV culture and an extension of space culture research. Urban space is a critical text, on which Teng establishes his teleplay. This paper analyses a series of representative urban space images, including modern office building, bar, cafe, high-class restaurant and vehicles, as well as house or apartment which is a typical mark of private space. All of the above are the most vivid and most visual image implication of modernization. As a type of visual sign, these space images are rich in cultural, value and significance, which is the most direct and real demonstration of urbanites’life and mental state. Establishment and evolution of space images in teleplay imply cultural changes, which offer us a reference system to study the complex relations in society, city and citizens in real life. These city images are like mental maps for citizens to percept and experience the city, and they show us the cultural differences and social cultural attribute.This paper takes Teng’s teleplay as a basic object of study, including the following three chapters:Chapter1briefly introduces Teng Huatao’s teleplay and its creation overview, and analyses the basic features of Teng’s teleplay, from the perspective of presenting the times, topic expression of mainstream discourse, as well as plebification narrative of self-contained public.Chapter2shows typical spatial images in Teng’s teleplay on the basis of cultural construction. Public space images, such as contrast between modern office building and traditional office, elevator, office position and spatial power, emerging of office building space and its cultural analysis. As to typical private spatial image, the contrast comes in modern dwelling and traditional house, power fight in parlor and kitchen, spatial images’establishment and cultural interpretation. It also analyses cultural implications of those city spatial images. Chapter3analyses conflicts for discourse power and space in different types of space in Teng’s teleplay, from the aspects of cultural conflicts, as well as cultural and space discourse. By the analysis and comparison of these typical space images, this part analyses space images’symbolizing representation and explores the discourse power conflicts behind it.In teleplay, space is not only a site or objective container, there is a strong cultural attribute behind it, especially in Teng’s most popular teleplays. To some extent, text is the reflection of certain power, discourse effect behind the space reflects different clashes. This paper expects to provide reference for the development of Chinese teleplay, through specific and meticulous analysis of Teng Huatao’s teleplay script, in order to obtain a double meaning and value in TV theories and practices.
