On The Newspaper Media Coverage Of Sports Events For Disabled People In China

In recent years, China’s printed media has given more and more coverage of sports news.Big events like the Olympic Games have been given full and comprehensive coverage anddomestic sports events and the relatively unpopular games have also been reported. Bothcompetitive and mass sports have seen greatly boosted coverage. Comprehensive and specializedsports newspapers have been developing rapidly. But generally speaking, this rage has notreached the paralyzed athlete games. How to lick this problem and promote the development ofParalympic Games is a matter of serious consideration.This paper takes People’s Daily, Titan, China Sports Newspaper and Southern MetropolisDaily as major objects of study. Using the content analysis method, literature method andcomparative analysis method, this paper compares the coverage differences between BeijingParalympic Games, Paralympic Games in London, the Beijing Olympic Games and the LondonOlympic Games. This paper puts forward solutions by studying and combing the difficulties andproblems of news report by printed media so as to accelerate the development of sports coverageof paralyzed games.Through comparative analysis I found that China’s printed media has paid much lessattention to Paralympic Games than Olympic Games both in terms of policy and printed mediathemselves: lack of attention from the newspaper’s executive level and low quality of sportsjournalists. Besides, as a result of less competitiveness, entertainment and enjoyability, paralyzedsports news have been in a stagnant state. Paralympic Games’ lack of iconic figure and relativelysmaller audience contribute to the imbalance coverage toady.Based on this reality, I propose that our country’s printed media, regarding the Paralympicnews report, should support government policy; strengthen the Paralympic sports journalists’own construction; strengthen development of disabled sports "the star movement" development;increase scientific and technological input to truly interpret the spirit of disabled sports games;enhance cooperation between the printed media and radio, television, network, new media; buildthe new media convergence report ecology; promote the formation of the industrial chain;vigorously publicize the disabled sports, establish the humanistic concern in the whole societywithin the scope of humanity concept in order to promote the disabled sports news reports andthe prosperous development of disabled sports.
