In the contemporary era of cultural mediumlization, many kinds of culture inhuman society, especially urban culture which is connected with mass culture, cannotbe divided from the propagation and influence of mass media.Organic connections often lie between mass media and urban culture. As acommunication media, mass media, as a carrier, often contain information’s exchangeamong urban internal and external elements. However, these functions ofintermediary agent also become a part of culture, which influence formation andchange of urban culture. On the contrary, urban culture, as a kind of competitiveresources which cannot be copied, influence, directly, the production of mass media’scontent. So an on-the-spot investigation of interactive relationship and influencebetween mass media and urban culture, is beneficial, not only to existed anddevelopment of mass media, but also to operation of urban culture’s ecologicalsystem.With the emphasis of research on the relationship between mass media and urbanculture, this paper analyze the structure, methods and process of mass media’s linkwith urban culture in space, under the theoretical instruction of geography of media.Afterwards, in the framework of antecedent theory, this paper also analyze therelationship, in the background of urban culture’s revulsion caused by reform andopening-up, between Xinmin Evening News, one of oldest evening news of China, andShanghai culture, which is the most topical urban culture in the process of China’smodernization, so as to research if there is some positive influence between massmedia and urban culture in and by each other. At the basis of fore research, this paperwill also analyze the conflict between mass media and urban culture, and directionand method of adjustment of the two, under the background of contemporary culturewhich is influenced by globalization and modernization. This paper will card and deepen, systematically, the relations of mass media andurban culture in the field of media geography, in the research method oftheory-demonstration-theory deepening, so as to appeal the link of mass media andurban culture in the field of space geography and in the crunodes of regional culture,and to maintain and improve multiple equilibrium and sustainable development ofcultural ecology system.
