Materials is the most key link of production in discrete workshop and penetrate the whole ofproduction process. How to manage materials effectively related to the promotion of productionefficiency and the boost of enterprise competitiveness. As the technology of internet of thingspresented and had been developing, the material management mode of traditional discretemanufacturing workshop has been affected and begins to change.According to the current situation of Chinese manufacturing industry, and puts forward the ideaof using the RFID technology to transform the existing production resources in order to achieve thepurpose of acquiring the material information and tracking production process automatically. Base onthe advantages of RFID technology, such as non-contact perception, batch acquisition, automaticacquisition and so on, the material condition (idle, in processing, processing finished, etc.) will bereflected in time, the real-time, lucidly and reliably information will be supplied to the establish ofproduction plan, and lay a foundation for the Manufacturing information.The paper elaborated current domestic and international situation of RFID technology and itsapplication in discrete production, it also analysed the characteristics of discrete manufacturingproduction and discussed the differences of material management mode of traditional discretemanufacturing workshop and the material management mode based on internet of things, in thisfoundation, the framework of material management system and workshop network were built.With regard to the information of materials and other manufacturing elements, the informationmodels were built on the basis of STEP standard, the material information also was expressed by theXML language.The system also can monitor the transmission situation of material in order to make the materialmanagement lucid and timely.Finally, the material management system based on internet of things was developed.
