With the expansion of the Internet users’ number, which leeds to the huge demand fornetwork bandwidth, data centers have to grow at an unprecedented rate to meet it. In thepast, most companies separate storage network and local area network,in order to supportmulti-network, servers are deploied with different facility for different network.Multi-network architecture also increases the cost of management and maintenance of thedata center. The appearance of Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and I/O virtualizationtechnology provides an opportunity to solve the above problems. On the basis of the analysis of the existing high-speed Ethernet adapters and I/Ovirtualization technology, this paper presents a method to design a network adaptor, whichcan support virtual devices in virtual mechine and lossless Ethernet protocol. The design ofconverage network adaptor is based on Xilinx’s Embedded Development Platform, the keypoint is that there are several receive/transmit queues in the adaptor. Each queues isassociated with different buffers.Virtual devices read/write the buffer owned bythemselves and share the only physical device. In the design, credits and two queue-pickarbitration algorithms are used to manage the network in order to avoid packet beingdropped. In addition, the adaptor realizes the SR-IOV standard of PCI Express,so theadaptor can support I/O virtualization technology in hardware.A model of communicationbetween Physical Functions and Virtual Functions in PCIe device is designed for dataexchange between PFs and VFs.The result indicates that in sample mode, the adaptor can receive and transfer datacorrectely. The result also indicates that the model of mult-queues for transfer/receive isfeasible in I/O virtualization environment.
