Thorough research and analysis was Conducted about WSNs with typical LEACHprotocol. Given that the LEACH protocol did not have taken into account trust and residualenergy of nodes, the fault-tolerant deficiency between cluster head and cluster nodes in thecluster head election mechanism, long-term operation of LEACH protocol may affect thenormal work of the net. Improvement on LEACH protocol is proposed in this paper, i.e.,ET-LEACH protocol based on trust and energy.Aiming at the shortcomings of the LEACH protocol in terms of cluster head election, this article puts forward the cluster head election algorithm based on trust and energy. Thealgorithm relying on the node trust value and residual energy in election selected relativelybest node in condition as the cluster head through comprehensive comparison of trust valueand the residual energy of each node.Aiming at the cluster head node fault-tolerant deficiency of LEACH protocol, amethod of electing backup cluster head sets is proposed based on the analysis of the1:1typedesigned twin-cavity fault-tolerant technology. Candidate sets of cluster head were electedaccording to node trust value and residual energy. When the current cluster failed, clusterheads are selected automatically from the candidate set, decreasing the number of electionsfor the entire network.Aiming at the fault-tolerant deficiency of cluster nodes in the LEACH protocol, thispaper proposed a method to determine the working ability of the node through comparing theperformance of the nodes during two consecutive data sending. The master cluster-headjudges working state of the cluster head node by comparing whether the nodes sendinformation successfully in two consecutive cycles, the, thus it could conduct the non-clusterhead node fault-tolerant processing.Simulation results show that ET-LEACH protocol to a certain extent, improved thereliability of cluster heads, prolonged the survival time of network, improved the networkthroughput and data transmission efficiency, enhanced the overall network fault toleranceperformance.
