Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which is integrated with computer, communication, network, intelligent computing, sensor, embedded system, micro-electronic, is a new subject of overlapping comprehensive multi-field and can be used for collaborative sensing, collecting, processing and transferring information of monitored objects. Because WSNs can be rapidly and flexibly be deployed, and free from constraints such as cable network, it can be widely used in military, medical, environmental monitoring, counter-terrorism and public security and so on, it has a broad application prospects. As a new field of research in the modern communication technology field, WSNs has been aroused high attention in academia and industry. With the development of WSNs, the security problems of WSNs are becoming more and more important. WSNs is faced with a variety of attacks in which the attacks that aimed at routing layer are particularly severe, and maybe lead to paralysis of the entire network. Due to specific application environment of WSNs, at the beginning of designing routing protocols, the researchers primarily focused on saving energy consumption, without considering the security, while the security mechanisms of routing protocols for traditional network can not be applied to WSNs directly. Therefore, the security research of routing protocols for WSNs is very important. This paper mainly studies the security of routing protocol for WSNs, and analyzes and improves it. At first, this paper detailed analyzes typical existing routing protocols in WSNs, and selects GEAR (Geographic and Energy Aware Routing) which has better comprehensive performance than other routing protocols as an object for research. And then, this paper fully analyzes the attacks of routing layer, puts forward the corresponding defense strategies, and According to the advantage and disadvantages of GEAR, a new secure routing protocol named E-GEAR is designed. E-GEAR, which is based on design strategy of the existing security routing protocols, obtains the preferable safety feature by adding region division, key distribute scheme based on location, reputation evaluation mechanism based on multi-point confirm to GEAR, and can withstand a variety of attacks of network layer. Finally, GEAR and E-GEAR are simulated on the NS2 platform, and GEAR is compared with E-GEAR by simulation results. The energy simulation result shows that the increase in energy consumption for E-GEAR by introducing security mechanisms is smaller; security simulation result shows that E-GEAR has capacity to identify malicious nodes, and has better security level than GEAR in terms of packet delivery ratio and drop ratio while there exists attacking nodes.
