At present, the strength of science and technology directly affects the country’sinternational influence, so high priority was given to the transmission of science andtechnology around the world. As the backbone of the information transmission, massmedia has become the focus of science and technology transmission studies. It is thefundamental realities that TV coverage in China is much higher than that of the press,radio, the Internet and other mass media. Therefore, the advantages of TVincreasingly highlighted the mass media, which attracts high attention of the academicfield. Science education which is the main content of the science and educationtelevision programmes, is particularly the easiest-to-use tools of transmissionaleducation. It bears extremely expressive force in quickly and directly popularizingscientific knowledge to the public, in promoting and exchanging advanced technologyand experience, and in supporting advanced scientific experiments. Television iswidely loved and highly praised by the majority of the audience, and hasincomparable advantages compared with books and radios.The rise of science and education television programmes, is mainly caused bysocial and cultural development. Demand alternation of the audience and therenovation of socio-cultural backgrounds, promote the content development of TVprogrammes. Television, as one of the most important carriers of social culture,reflects the demand of the masses. The change of the concept of the audience as wellas of the scientific television programme producers is the continuous impetus for thedevelopment of science and education TV programmes.This thesis conducts research on educational function and development ofChina ’s science and education television programmes. It is divided into five sections.Part I, introduction. In this section, the reasons, purpose, meaning, approaches andstatus quo of the research are introduced. Part II, an overview of science andeducation television programmes. This section mainly deals with the definition,classifications and characteristics of science and education television programmes,and reviews the development history of China’s science and education channel. PartIII is a survey on the social functions of science and education television programmesin China. The social functions of television as a medium are first analyzed, and on thisbasis, the social functions of contemporary science and education televisionprogrammes are discussed by illustrating some classical science and educationtelevision programmes. Part IV is about the investigations and analyses of the demand for science and education television programmes. In its preliminary studies, the "useand gratification theory", the "demand" theory, psychological demands of theaudience, and the types of the audience are illustrated, then a questionnaire is adoptedto analyze the demand of the audience. Finally, based on the demand of the audience,the developmental significance of science and education TV programmes and theirdevelopment strategies are expounded in the fifth part.
