According to the background knowledge of the XML spatial metadata and the most popular relational database SQL Server, this paper uses the remote sensing image data to solve the storing problem of XML spatial metadata in China. At present, when dealing with large amounts of data, the file system has inherent defect. What’s more, object-oriented database systems and native XML databases are immature. Therefore, the coming period, the proportion of storing and querying spatial data management based on relational database XML spatial metadata is still large. In this paper, the research work is as following:1. This paper mainly studies the core technologies, which including storage mapping of XML data in a relational database and the XML query. And it comes out a whole new method about the storing and querying of XML metadata based on relational database. Also this paper does analyze and store the XML metadata, which means putting the XML metadata into the relational database. That makes the mapping scheme used in this paper feasible.2. Based on the storage model, this paper works out a kind of query processing mechanism, which relies on table join. Also this paper gets the corresponding query conversion algorithm. The algorithm can convert the path expression to the corresponding SQL statement.3. Appling the XML spatial metadata storage and query processing techniques to marine oil spill multi-source remote sensing image data management, the paper successfully makes the storage of the oil spill monitoring of remote sensing images, uses different XML instances of marine metadata and tests how long it will take to store and query the metadata. The result suggests the method is feasible and efficient.This article uses the XML to represent the metadata of the remote sensing image data, stores the XML spatial metadata into a relational database and confirms the method is reasonable. If we solve the problem of mapping between the XML data model and the relational schema, it will make the XML spatial metadata stored in a relational database easily, improve the efficiency of data query and make this method widely used in practical work.
