At present, widely used in the transportation, information, catering and othersectors, special printer occupies an important position in Chinese market. With theimprovement of electronic information and the level of automation, special printers ofhigher performance are required. As an important part of the special printer, cutting toolmainly completes the cutting paper automatically. The life of cutting tool impacts uponthe reliability of special printer. This paper is written to research the life of cutter.Firstly, this paper described the structure and working principle of cutting tool,analyzed the failure of cutting tool according to failure theory and experiments in orderto find out the causes of failure and put forward. The failure morphology of cutting toolis inspected by optical from the macroscopic and microcosmic perspective. The mainfailure part lies in the middle of the blade in bottom cutting tool and there are a lot ofnotches with different depth on the surface of cutter. Failure mode is two body ofabrasive wear that can be judged by the consideration of cutting tool. Based on theprinciple of friction science, the failure mechanism of cutting tool is plastic deformationand the main factors of effecting the life of cutting tool is the installation displacementof cutter.Secondly,the nonlinear analysis of cutting tool is made by using ANSYS. Thefinite element model of cutter is set up by ANSYS Parametric Design Language. Theconstraints and the loading conditions of model are also set up according to the practicalsituation of cutter. To judge the influences of displacement on the life of cutting tool,this paper concerns the stress distribution along the edge of bottom cutter and Changesof greatest stress when the assemble displacement is verified.Finally, a machine was built to detect the special printer cutting tool life and a kindof method to accelerate the failure of cutter was put forward. This machine canaccurately adjust the displacement in the horizontal and vertical direction of cutting tool,angle between the two surfaces of cutter and speed of cutting paper motor. The width offeeding paper also can be controlled by changing the paper motor frequency. The sensorcan detect the effect of cutting paper. The number of cut paper can be recordedaccurately.
