Character recognition is an important part of pattern recognition. Most of the imageprocessing is implemented by DSP、ARM、DSP+FPGA or computer directly after the image datais obtained by the image acquisition device in the existing character recognition system.Thispaper mainly discusses an digital character recognition system which is based on the FPGA. Inthis system, image acquisition, image processing and digital character recognition are allimplemented by FPGA, the results will be displayed after the recognition by digital tube,whichwill make full use of FPGA in it’s hardware advantage and improve the integration of the system.In this paper, the object of image acquisition is the serial number of the RMB, and thecorrectness of the algorithm and the implemented with FPGA will be verified by the recognitionof the serial number of the RMB.The digital character recognition system in this paper is mainly composed by three parts.Which includes image acquisition device, image processing device and the result outputingdevice, the design of the system can be divided into a software design and a hardware design. Inthe aspect of software, the process of character processing is divided into image denoising,image binaryzation, character segmentation and character recognition, the algorithm of everyprocess is developmented in Matlab, the simulation of the algorithm will be completed bypowerful image processing functions in Matlab. With the consideration of the ability ofrealization in FPGA, the algorithm of image processing for each process will be determinedfinally. In the aspect of hardware, the CMOS image sensor OV7620will be used in the imageacquisition device which is produced by Omnivision company, the X3CS500E-4PQ208(FPGA)chip is used as a core chip in system conrtl which is a chip of Spartan3E series in Xilinxcompany. As well as the image sensor is contrled by FPGA, the saving of the image and thecommunication with the host computer are all implemented by FPGA. The system Generatormodules and Verilog language are combined in the hardware implementation,for each of the module function and the the correctness of the algorithm in hardware will be verified by thesimulation of modelsim.
