The Application Of Linked Data In Digital Photo Archive Resources Management

Image is one of the most important forms of archival. Photo has been a valuable record since its invention for it is vivid, intuitive, authentic, objective and has abundant information. With a substantial increase in the number of digital photo files, digital photo file cataloging, management and application become increasingly difficult. People are not satisfied merely to obtain the scattered information directly from the hypertext document any longer, which pose a new challenge for the archival resources management and service. The various defects existing in Photo archives work are urging innovative and practical technology.Linked Data as a new semantic publishing tool, is an important technology of revealing and using for digital resources. There are broad application prospects in the integration of data in isolation, providing open metadata service, achieving semantic interoperability of data and the Web service. Linked Data provides a publishing paradigm in which not only documents, but also data, can be a first class citizen of the Web, thereby enabling the extension of the web with a global data space based on open standards-the Web of Data.The application of linked data in digital photo archive management could bring economic, cultural, social benefits to archives. And it is also an innovative way for the archives to improve their social status and realize its service value.This paper at first summarizes the existing difficulties in the management of digital photo archive through analyzing its status. Then it explains the theoretical significance, content, feature, technical principles and key points of linked data. After briefly introducing the research of linked data in the field of archives study, this paper suggests to learn from the achievements of library in linked data. Besides, the data sets covering main topics are described to introduce the linked data application.The conclusion that it is necessary to apply linked data in archives is made by analyzing its significance from three different angles. The functions of linked data in digital photo archives management are mentioned, too. Following this, it determines the range of data for archival resources, namespaces and publishers as well as the link format for photo archives. More specifically, the processes from establishment of the basic data to establishing data relationships, making RDF mapping files and integrating external resource are described in detail. Finally, it demonstrates the availability of linked data query in photo archives. In order to show the effect of implementation of linked data in the photo archive resources management, the article introduces a successful case in East China Normal University Archives and improves its resource integration using linked data technology.At last, the advantages of associating the news and characters information as well as publishing the archives as linked data format are concluded. In future, more attention should be paid to construct the framework of the services, expand the range of resources options and improve the user experience.
