With the launch of strategic target of comprehensive construction smart power grids by State Grid Corporation of China and the requirements of smart power grids on the operation data of the power grid and real-time monitoring users’ electric energy information. Design a remote meter reading system based on the GPRS wireless communication technology has great realistic significance for Datong power grid construction. This project is mainly study on the implementation of remote meter reading and power monitoring technology based on GPRS for the modern electricity consumption managements.In this paper, a remote meter reading system based on the GPRS wireless communication technology is designed, which makes full use of the advantag-es of real-time online, billing according to the data flow, and high-speed transmission. The General Technology Plan of system and the key technology scheme are demonstrated in this paper uses the GPRS multifunctional meter and collecting terminal based on TC65wireless modules. According to need to choose reasonable measurement points, and choose operating of part public transformers of Dong Fangcheng substation and some customer’s distribution transformer. Through the completion of the system of practical acceptance, the system realizes the remote automatic collection of statistic data of larger customers, public distribution transformer and residents, the system build an data center platform based on electric data, which can realize the functions of automatic energy statistics, net loss calculating and analysis, power monitoring, marketing decision support and so on through data processing and mining methods. It shows that the system works well in realizing the various functions of the modern electricity consumption management, such as demand management, load management, consumption monitoring and controlling.
