In the traditional English teaching in China, teachers pay little attention to vocabulary. The English Curriculum Standard has higher and higher requirements on the students’ vocabulary ability and little vocabulary becomes the most serious obstacle in the students’ process of learning English. The goal of English Curriculum Standard has nine levels. High school students can graduate after achieving the goal of the seventh level, that is students are supposed to have a vocabulary of2,400-2,500words and300-400useful phrases or collocation.In recent years, a large number of studies have shown that the main status of vocabulary teaching in the whole language teaching, vocabulary teaching has been the attention of the linguists and language teaching. More and more researchers do a lot of research is committed to seeking reliable and effective English vocabulary teaching methods, in order to help students’ better learning and memory of vocabulary. In this paper, the author embarks from the teaching practice, combined with textbooks, hold the characteristic of English words, using the method of communication, concept map, semantic method, and context embedded method, and present the word dictionary method. The game method at the same time, listening to songs, reading material, retell the article method to make the students memorize words, through the contrast class teaching experiment to find the most effective vocabulary learning method.The thesis has five chapters.Chapter one is to introduce the situation of vocabulary teaching, the situation of the author’s school, the significance of the research, and the structure of this thesis.Chapter two is to introduce literature about vocabulary teaching, including the major research about vocabulary teaching in China and abroad.Chapter three and Chapter Four are the main part of the thesis. In the third chapter, the author, combining with the teaching materials, depends on the practical teaching and the characteristic of English words, and tries to use communicative method, concept map, semantic method, context implanted. At the same time, the author uses the game method, listening to songs method, reading materials method; retell the article method to make the students memorize words. In the fourth chapter the author describes the whole process of teaching experiment according to the six-month experiment, using the questionnaires, before test and after test method, compares the test scores of the experimental class and the controlled classes before and after the experiment. According to the result analysis, the author confirms that the English vocabulary teaching methods the third chapter discusses are feasibility and effectiveness. Chapter five is a conclusion part. Through the experiment result, the author mentions the influence on teachers and students. It shows the shortcomings of this research and some suggestions to the teachers as well.
