English vocabulary acquisition is essential to the whole process of English learning,that is, a certain amount of vocabulary lays the foundation for the smooth communicationin listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating. From this perspective, the middleschool where I have been working with has been confronted with a major issue invocabulary teaching. Specifically speaking, outflow of students to major cities gives wayto backward learners, who are less interested in English learning and new wordsmemorizing. That’s why our teachers are supposed to find out how to improve the currentsituation in our school.Based on the related literature, this thesis is intended to study the following aspectsalong with the questionnaires and interviews of the whole English teachers and quite anumber of students in Xilingol Bai Qi No.2Middle School: i) conceptions and options ofvocabulary teaching; ii) frequencies of ten commonly used methods of vocabulary teaching;iii) command of vocabulary and teaching contents; iv) problems in the teaching; v)students’uses of the methods. In light of the data analysis on the survey, we have found thecurrent situation of the vocabulary teaching in our school as follows:1. Most teachers have some ideas on the theory of vocabulary teaching but lack somesystematic learning. Most of them with lower initial diplomas, or later with improved onesvia correspondence courses, are still falling behind in teaching aptitude, languageenhancement and practical teaching abilities. After the new curriculum reform, teachers’teaching idea can not be truly internalize, they can’t put it into teaching practice. Theteachers’understanding of new curriculum standard need to deepen.2. The students in our school have not developed the proper attitude towards Englishlearning, which cause a lot of difficulties for teachers’ practical teaching. And our teachersare not doing enough to help poor student, which adds more negative discouragement tostudents’learning, gradually students lose interest in English, eventually give it up.3. To the ten kinds of teaching methods, apart from the four methods of the direct-viewing, lexical chunks, topics and the communicative, the rest are used more often.By contrast, the combination of pronunciation, form and meaning is the most widely one,in their vocabulary teaching teachers pay much attention to the word’s meaning and usagebut ignore the pronunciation. Teachers still pay more attention to language input than tolanguage output, more to studying than to acquiring. Exam-oriented education tends to beserious, Such exam-oriented education with inflexible methodology and rigid classroomatmosphere cannot be student-centered, without aroused interest, improved life experienceor cognition levels in teaching.4. Too much teaching content has bad influence on students’ mastering the vocabulary.Furthermore, with limited vocabulary learning strategies and techniques, students are onlymade to learn the new words by rote; with so much vocabulary in new textbooks, studentshave great anxiety about learning English and fear psychology will spread in their Englishlearning.In order to overcome these obstacles, teachers are supposed to fully be aware of thesignificance of vocabulary teaching in the new curriculum and improve their teaching withmore imparting of learning strategies and all-round understanding of students throughmultiple teaching methods.
