In the past, teachers mainly taught the pronunciation, spelling and meaning of the words. It depended on the students to remember the new words. There were no useful methods, therefore students felt it hard and boring to remember the words. They usually made great efforts only to get no results. Especially to those students in Senior Middle School, who face the pressure of the exams and heavy burdens, they wouldn't spend too much on the vocabulary. As a result, it's hard to improve their English. In order to change the situation, I did some research on the theories of teaching vocabulary and analyzed the problems in the teaching . I also came up with several ways to improve their study of words, such as: stimulating the active study, various ways of teaching in class like teaching word formation, word study in the whole passage, different word usage of different culture, learning by listening and speaking , especially the methods of memory, aiming to improve their English study and their English ability. There are four parts: firstly, I state the importance of teaching vocabulary: secondly , I set out some main researches home and abroad; thirdly, I analyze the situation and problems of the present teaching ; finally, I summarize several methods to solve the present problems.
