Vocabulary learning is the foundation of English study and vocabulary teaching is one important part of English teaching. However, mechanical memory is still popular among high school students in vocabulary study and this is of no good. Besides, different teachers adopt diverse but unsystematic approaches to vocabulary teaching. Thus, exploring a new model of vocabulary teaching is emergent.In addition, compared with the old textbooks and teaching outlines, the new ones used since 2003 have greatly stressed vocabulary teaching. Apart from a larger vocabulary, it tends to focus on the practical and efficient use of the words.Memory is closely linked to vocabulary learning. Luckily, the research results on memory and the Theory of the Depths of Processing of cognitive psychology greatly contribute to vocabulary learning. Based on these results, a new model of vocabulary teaching, the vocabulary processing teaching model is put forward. It includes two kinds; one is the Surface-level Processing Vocabulary Teaching Methods and the other Deep-level Vocabulary Processing Teaching Methods. Both are illustrated with practical teaching examples in this paper.The paper includes five parts.Partâ… explains the aims and significance of the research. Partâ…¡provides some findings on memory according to cognitive psychology to show how cognitive psychology can direct vocabulary teaching. Partâ…¢provides some findings on vocabulary study by some famous scholars both at home and abroad. Partâ…£describes the current misunderstandings in vocabulary teaching in terms of teachers and students and the great need to reform the traditional methods of vocabulary teaching. I demonstrate with vivid and concrete examples the new model.Partâ…£is the conclusion of this thesis, my harvest of doing this research and the prospect of vocabulary teaching.
