The curriculum of senior high school puts forward the following specific requirements for English teaching:teachers’behavior should shift from the explanation of linguistic knowledge to emphasis on students’involvement and the process of linguistic perception; from unilateral textbooks teaching to the development and utilization of curriculum resources to broaden learning channels. Based on these requirements, this thesis aims to explore the relevance between the cultivation of English sense for senior high school students and newspaper-based instruction through theoretical study and instructional practice. In theory, language sense can be gradually gained in linguistic practice and it is of cultivability. Besides, as a kind of ability, language sense varies from one to another, and it needs a test. The relevant study of Wang peiguang reveals that it consists of three capabilities:(1) the ability to judge the appropriateness of language;(2) the ability to find out the problem of language usage;(3) the ability to solve the problem of language usage. And the excise of error correction can better test the above three abilities, namely the ability of language sense, therefore use of error correction, a quantitative test of language sense, is feasible in this study. Based on the schema theory and the implicit and explicit learning theory, this study tries to analyze the relevance of English newspaper reading and English language sense cultivation. The results show that language sense for senior high school students can be enhanced by means of newspaper-based instruction. This study is based on a one-term program conducted among90students in the second year in two classes of Fuzhou Huaqiao Middle School. The subjects are experimented with newspaper-based instruction on the basis of control groups. Marks and quantified scores for language sense are achieved for those90participants during the semester. Results go as follows:Both of classes have certain English language sense through one-term teaching (P=0.000<0.01). The results show that language sense is cultivable through English study.Experimental class in language sense test achieved more positive and encouraging results than control class (P=0.03<0.05). The results show that newspaper-based instruction is an effective method to improve English language sense for senior high school students. Experimental class got higher marks in English test than control class (P=0.000<0.01).The results show that not only can newspaper-based instruction facilitate English language sense but also students’English marks.
