With the progress of economic globalization, English teaching plays a more and moreimportant role in the quality education in primary school. Under the instruction of new curriculumstandard, a variety of primary school English textbooks with different versions has been emergedin China. With different kinds of English textbooks in the market, it seems very important tochoose the right textbooks and analyze the textbooks scientifically.In the thesis, through the research on the evaluation of domestic and foreign English teachingtextbooks, Cheng Xiaotang’s English textbook evaluation will be deeply interpreted. Combinedwith the in-depth interviews and questionnaire survey on English teachers, an evaluation methodapplied to the evaluation of primary school English textbook practicality will be put forward fromthe perspective of teachers and students. Then the author selects two comparison objects: PEPPrimary school English published by the People’s Education Press and commonly used in theprimary school in Ningbo; Oxford English published by Shanghai Education Publishing House andwidely used. The author will give a comprehensive system analysis of the two different versions ofthe textbooks through literature method, questionnaire method, interview method and comparativemethod.In the thesis, according to the use of teachers and students, the author will evaluate thepracticality of the textbooks. From the prospective of teachers, a practical textbook should includethe following conditions: adequate content, easy to use; the teaching contents can be flexiblyadjusted without often changing the textbooks; the textbook should be able to let the teachers useconveniently, but save preparation time; in the class, without depending on teaching reference canbe taught; a combination of old and new knowledge and the reproducing rate of key languagephenomenon should be focused on. From the points of the students, a practical teaching textbookshould meet the following requirements: students willing to use, and can reflect the students’learning needs and learning interest; the difficulty and length of textbook is appropriate; there isenough real language materials with the content closing to the real life; a combination with thepractical application of language skills and the studying of language knowledge; focusing on the coordinated development of relevant language skills and having comprehensive language trainingand enough communicative activities; paying attention to the cultivation of students’ ability ofindependent use of language.The research shows that the two sets of textbooks own a high evaluation in practicality, but theOxford English is better than PEP Primary School English. At the end of the thesis, some opinionsand suggestions will be put forward on how to better use the two sets of English textbooks.
