In foreign language teaching,teaching material is an important guarantee to achieve teaching syllabus.It is also the main material for students to acquire systematical knowledge and learn.Meanwhile,it’s also the main basis for teachers to teach.With the continuous progress of curriculum reform and the implementation of the policy of "one program with multiple books",there are various versions of primary school English textbooks in China.How to evaluate the quality of textbooks from a practical perspective is concerned by English teachers and educational researchers.This paper takesprimary school English textbook "English(new standard)" as an example to evaluate its practicality,so as to guide teachers’ teaching better and provide valuable suggestions for textbook makers to compile better.The full text consists of six parts.The first chapter is the introduction.It mainly introduces the background,purpose,significance,research status and methods.The second chapter is the core concepts and theoretical basis of the study.On the basis of previous studies,the writer has defined the concepts of teaching materials,English textbooks,the evaluation of teaching materials,practicality and the practicality of teaching materials and taken the evaluation theory of philosophical value,Hutchinson and Waters’ demand analysis theory and Masuhara’ demand analysis theory as the basis for the study of primary school English teaching materials analysis.The third chapter is the indexes of the practical evaluation of the English textbooks in primary school.Based on the research of all scholars,the writer sets up indicators for practicality of primary school English textbooks,including to meet students’ learning needs and to meet teachers’ teaching needs.The two indexes are also carried out from the content of learning,the conditions of easy learning,the content of teaching and the conditions of easy teaching.The fourth chapter is the design of the investigation and research of the practicality of the " English(new standard)" teaching materials.It mainly elaborates the design of questionnaire survey and interview survey.The questionnaire survey mainly elaborates the purpose,objectives and the tools of the survey and the interview mainly elaborates the purpose,objects and the outlines of the interview.The fifth chapter is the result and analysis of the investigation.According to the indicators of practical evaluation,the result of the survey and interview are analyzed in detail by using words,tables and charts.The sixth chapter is the problems in the research and suggestions of the study.Through the above research,this paper draws the following conclusions: First,the set of this teaching materials can basically meet the needs of students and teachers.The overall design of textbooks is in line with the students’ cognitive level and according with teachers’ teaching style.It emphasizes the study of the language knowledge and the practical application.The appearance,design and illustration of teaching materials are conducive to arouse students’ interest in learning and help teachers carry out teaching.Second,there are some problems in the practicality of the set of these textbooks.For example,the knowledge of phonetic is too little.There are a large vocabularies and the repetition rate of these vocabularies is not high,which is not suitable for the students to master the vocabularies.The arrangement of grammar in these textbooks is lack of Susan’s it is disperse.It pays more attention to the listening and speaking but ignores the practising of reading and writing.The related exercises don’t match well with the textbooks.in order to solve these above problems,the writer put forward some specific suggestions from two aspects--the textbook compilers and the teachers.
